Slash Your Monthly Bills Without Losing Your Sparkle
Alright, ladies, let’s get real. You’re piecing your life back together post-divorce, and those bills are hitting you like a ton of bricks. I’ve been there before I was reluctantly dragged into financial enlightenment, and trust me—your monthly expenses are bleeding you dry. But here’s the deal: you can slash those costs without living like a hermit. These are straight-up, no-nonsense ways to trim your bills and free up cash for what matters—paying off debt, saving for a trip, or just not stressing every paycheck. Let’s cut the fluff and dive in.
The Bill-Slashing Playbook
These are for anyone feeling the pinch, no matter your income.
1. Delete Uber Eats and Delivery Apps ($200++ Savings a month)
Listen, here’s the deal: you have to delete Uber Eats, DoorDash, and all those delivery apps. They’re ruining your budget, and you don’t even realize how bad it is. I ordered Chipotle for myself the other night, and I didn’t get anything crazy; it was over $50 after all the fees and tip. If you went to a restaurant, would you spend $50 on a burrito? 10000% NO! I don’t care how boring it is to eat at home; if you want to move up in life, you need to cut out expenses, and this is one of them. Period.
I’m writing another post on avoiding takeout temptation later, but for now, 100% delete those apps. Cap eating out at $50/month—one girls’ night a month. Throw all your newfound cash at credit card debt or a savings account. You’ll thank me later when you’re not broke.
2. Pick One Streaming Service, Ditch the Rest ($50++ Savings a month)
You don’t need Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Spotify all at once. That’s $40+ a month down the drain. Binge-watching is great for post-divorce healing, but let’s be smart. Choose your favorite and cancel the others. Rotate them—binge one for a month, then switch. No need to pay for all the shows you’re not watching.
3. Cancel That Pricey Gym Membership ($150++ Savings a month)
I LOVE Orange Theory. I loved going and PRing every month, I loved the coaches, the front desk staff, I joined with my two cousins and we would all go together 3 times a week (minimum). I lost 60 pounds and a husband going to Orange Theory. It’s also $200 a month. As much as it was my favorite thing each week….it had to go. For some of you, I understand you love your Equinox membership but you will love not being in credit card debt even more. These sacrifices don’t need to be forever, but they do need to be for right now. Cancel it! Join your local YMCA, Blink Fitness, Planet Fitness - it’s not glamorous but it will get the job done while you get your feet on the ground.
4. Groceries
Groceries are a budget killer, especially if you’re grabbing pre-made meals or fancy brands to make life easier. I am going to write an entire blog post on grocery shopping and preparing food at home. There is so much savings here. For now, take a look at what you are spending each month on grocery - take a 3 month snapshot.
5. Cancel Cable: Do you have cable and streaming services? Pick one or the other. I cancelled my cable because the only thing I was watching on it was the news and the rest of my tv watching was on the streaming services. I saved $60 a month cancellign cable.
Your bills might feel like an ex-husband who keeps piling on demands—especially with child support thrown into the mix—but you’ve got the power to shut them down. By cutting out delivery apps, streamlining streaming services, swapping pricey gym memberships for budget-friendly options, tackling grocery overspending, and ditching cable, you’re not just saving money—you’re reclaiming your financial freedom. These changes aren’t about deprivation; they’re about redirecting your hard-earned cash toward what truly matters: paying off debt, building savings, or treating yourself to that well-deserved vacation. Start small, stay consistent, and watch your bank account grow. You’ve already survived a divorce—you’re tougher than tough. Now go crush those bills and build the life you deserve.
